*At the age of thirty-six Blessed Junipero Serra left Spain to enter the mission fields of the New World. After spending many years in Mexico he was transferred to California where he established a total of nine missions and evangelized many of the natives. It was at this mission in Carmel, which he had established in 1770, that he eventually died. His body is now buried beneath the sanctuary floor of this church.
